Taonga Puoro Wananga Ki Ōtautahi: Traditional Maori instruments workshop (all ages).
Learn how to build and play traditional Maori instruments, with local experts Tony Smith (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāi Tahu – Kāti Irakehu) and Geoff Low. The Kaupapa for the weekend: To learn how to build and/or play traditional Māori instruments and also the Tikanga and oral histories of these treasures.
The basic programme:
1. An introductory showcase for which Tony and Geoff will demonstrate their sonic treasures
2. Workshop – building / making or playing / composing
3. Collaborative electroacoustic performance
Tony Smith has spent many years learning how to make and play the many instruments that he now has and the Tikanga associated with them. Most participants usually go home with a couple of new instruments that they make themselves and the skill to play them.
