Resonifying the City

Artist: Stanier Black-Five
Where:  Cathedral Square and under the Colombo Street Ballantynes air bridge.
When: Installation 1-2 March

Returning lost sounds to the city: from the bells of Christchurch Cathedral to the noisy pre-quake streetscape of Colombo Street.

A series of discrete installations across the central city that resonify selected spaces that have fallen largely silent following the earthquakes. This builds on her current installation in Colombo Street, which reflects the sounds of a once noisy thoroughfare back into the street and will also include bringing the bells back to Cathedral Square. The work will be created using a mixture of public archival material and personal recordings.

By the time of the festival it will have been over three years since the familiar sound of our cathedral bells struck on the hour. Stanier Black-Five will bring back this integral part of our city’s soundscape for the weekend of Audacious.

The sounds for these installations were recorded around Christchurch by Stanier Black-Five, except the historic Christchurch Cathedral bells recording, made and kindly donated by Mike Clayton.
